ANTI VIRUS VERSUS TRAPS
All anti virus programs use a method that is known as fingerprinting to detect a virus.
And ransomware is basically a computer virus. The problem is that nowadays it is so easy to create a ransomware virus that almost everybody, with the right contacts, is capable of making such a virus. And as this ransomware virus will not make itself known until a certain date (when it will be to late), it is almost impossible for an anti virus program to detect a ransomware virus.
So only when ransomware pirates re-use a ransomware virus will it be detected by an anti virus program. And as it is the trick not to be discovered until it is to late, this will hardly ever happen.
A trap uses a different technique. Some files in some locations are no ordinary files, they are special files. So it might look like a Word file, but it isn’t a regular Word file and you should not use this file. Every time period (set by you) the system will check to see if this file was altered or deleted. If so it will report this to you. You may even set an option to turn off the computer when this happens.
To prevent that you accidently alter or delete a trap by yourself you should give each file a prefix. If your name is John Doe you could use JD_ as a prefix for all trap files. If you see such a file than you know not to touch it.
